board game - your assigned a identity at the start and that determines what privileges you get
IDEAS
music that reminds you of a certain memory in your past
IDENTITY
photo album - compile photos of someones live, give the album to a stranger and see what assumptions are made
IN CLASS THOUGHTS (suggestions)
ID card as an identifier of your identity
Is it personal? Do you identify with the institutionalised identity
What are the possible metaphors and what are the first steps that we should make
are we taking pictures or drawing when talking to someone
chose your own path game. With your given identity you are given choices but are they really your own choices or has society already chosen them for you
artist as identity
To define: what is an identity
-institutional identity
-personality
-hobbies
-work, career
-major(for students), alpha and beta
-stereotypes + prejudice
-gender performance vs gender identity
-nature vs nurture
-you're influenced by people and things around you
-dictionary:
1. the fact of being who or what a person or thing is
2. a close similarity or affinity
-gender, nationality, cultural background, religion, sexuality, ethnicity, political affiliation
-likes and dislikes
-ego
Alik: People assume things about you based on your appearance, calling you out on how you act and dress, because it does not match with your gender. Random people, but also family and friends, which hits deeper. When there has been a conversation, the person chose to ignore it
Diana:because of the gender im perceived as, people expect me to act according to their views of that gender, especially in a traditional society like Romania.
my gender is schrödingers cat
Dyno: I assumed I was a girl for most of my life (compliant hetero), because I had no idea
Identity is fluid, nothing is set in stone. Is identity a human construct?
Alik: No, in the animal world there are personalities and roles
GENDER
FUCK THE BINARY
Trans lions exist :)

Ideas about gender:
-Immersive, interactive, and/or educational?
-Mirrors (sleeping beauty, you see what you want to see (positive and negative), mirrors are not accurate, you don't know what you actually look like (inverted)
-no one will ever fully understand you, they have different experiences, it will never be 100% the same (existential)
-figure out the story we want to tell, then choose the medium
-the story is told by a robot trying to understand gender/identity, or a conversation between a human and robot about gender (AI is biased, so is the human)
-performance piece with a mirror, walking through hanging mirror pieces, playing with light, wearing a mask with mirror (another person can be a reflection of yourself, nurture vs nature)
-what if we have two masks and they are staring at each other ( we are just a reflection of a reflection of a reflection) Do you know who you are, do the people you are close with know who you are?
-water has an identity, is fluid and is also a mirror. Humans are made 70% of water. Narcissus
-We interview the water in our body (blood, mucus, saliva, piss, lymph fluid, bone marrow)
Gender and ego kind of overlap.
Example: A parent telling their child to dress/present a certain way, the child becomes self aware and it becomes an insecurity -> self esteem, the way you see yourself
How other see you affects how you see yourself
-> looking at yourself from outside yourself (mirror), you're looking at yourself though the eyes of others
-> you think others are gonna see you in a certain way
idea for installation:
shape of a body with water, we release the water, then put in another fluid that looks like water, or just water again. The body looks the same, but the water/fluid is different, is the body then still the same?
Everything you experience changes your mind.
"We have to change to stay the same" but why would you want to stay the same? You can also stay the same without changing?
MIRRORS
and water
roles
Diana: writing, drawing
Alik: cinematography, drawing
Dyno: writing, directing, lights & sound, editing
Emir:
Set and props is collaborative
To do week 2:
- research + experiment with mirrors, masks & water
- illustrate and write
-think and write/draw about personal connection to mirrors and masks
Collective writing:

Our Theory:
""Identity," we argue, tends to mean too much (when understood in a strong sense), too little (when understood in a weak sense), or nothing at all (because of its sheer ambiguity)." -Beyond Identity, ROGERS BRUBAKER and FREDERICK COOPER
Identity is a social construct, but that does not make it any less real to the identified. It is what you make of it. Identity can be weaponised by or against you, or used as a reason for bias. The ambiguity lies between the self identification and the other's perception of your identity.
Identity is a tool you use to position yourself in relation to the other. Therefore, identity is more of a map or guideline that facilitates communication and relationships. And like every map, it is not a perfect representation of you. As identity is defined by words, it is a limiting concept. Is it truly freedom, or is it tying you down?
Assuming identity is a relationship, if you were alone, would you still have an identity? Our aim is not to provide answers, but generate questions. Who is an identity really for? Why do we cling to the things we used to identify with, even if it no longer is the case? Are we willing to change our identities in order to be loved? And does it work?
Foucault defines identity as an onion, layered, where each layer combines to make up an identity. But if everything is your identity, then could it be said that nothing is your identity? In a world without society, would identity exist? Are the "onion layers" there to make up an identity, or are they there to hide your inner core, more like an artichoke?
We would argue that identity is not static, it's fluid and ever-changing. As we go through experiences we find new ways to define ourselves and abandon parts of our identities that don't fit anymore. How you see yourself and how you see the world changes over time. In return, how others see you changes as well, sometimes naturally, sometimes as a response.
How do you feel about this? Does identity matter to you?
